" You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon ?…It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. "

I saw a "fan theory" that stated that Han was just bullshitting, waiting to see if Obi-wan caught on to his lie (he didn't) before setting his price, knowing full well that parasecs are not units of length.

The other thing is that, in hyperspace, you're speed is not how fast you travel in YOUR frame of reference, but how quickly you can compute and maneuver to avoid collisions and deal with the gravitational pull of planets to avoid your ship being torn apart (think about how a bump in the road is so much worse at 120mph than 30mph). So that would imply that the "Kessel run" would be point-to-point, but with lots of debris and stuff in the way that would prevent the hyperdrive from making a very straight line, so the shortest path possible DOES mean that the ship is technically 'faster'.

The other option is that the Kessel Run is a path heavily patrolled and guarded, so its not about speed as much as it is about stealth, 12 parasecs would be a feat because he could get from A to B with as minimal ground covered (and thus areas of detectibility) as possible.

There's also the possibility that the Kessel Run is between two planets or bodies that are moving away from eachother (or one has an elliptical orbit) so being able to get off one and to the other in as short as distance as possible would imply incredible acceleration and speed, and the distance is how far the objects were from eachother when he started or ended.

It's all rather fascinating how one line (which I believe lucas himself sort of says 'we just used words that sounded cool') could spawn so many different theories and ideas about what it means, not because it's correct, but because it's factually incorrect .

Did you ever see the Wookieepedia article on the Kessel Run? As far as the script went, yes, Han was bullshitting to impress, though Ben caught the lie. The EU however, came up with an in-universe explanation: Ships smuggling Spice from Kessel follow an 18 parsec route past the Maw black hole cluster to avoid Imperial ships. As fast as the Falcon was, Han could fly closer to the Maw, cutting seven and a half parsecs off the trip. As it turned out, he was spotted anyway, so he dumped the spice, leading to that whole unpleasantness with Jabba.
